THE PROJECT

SeeBeNow has produced over 350 yoga, meditation, and instruction videos, primarily filmed in Bali. However, the only way to watch them was through a basic Wordpress website. I was hired to design an iPhone app that people could use during their practice. First, I created a design prototype that secured investor funding. In collaboration with the founder/CEO, I then brought the concept through the full product design process. I also helped him find and select a development team to build the app.

The SeeBeNow app launched in the App Store in 2017 and has been very successful, with a 13% conversion rate from app downloads to paid monthly subscribers ($8.88/month) – far above average.

For comparison, our main competitor Headspace has a 4% conversion rate.

organizing content

Many yoga and meditation apps have complex filtering and discovery flows that can be incredibly confusing to users. SeeBeNow keeps it down to three simple filters: Element, Category, and Time. Element allows you to choose how you want to feel. Do you want to relax and cool down with water, or get energized with Fire?  Category allows you to choose Body (workouts), Mind (talks), or Self (meditations). Time allows you to choose the length of the video. One of the first steps was to decide how people will apply filters, as well as search for specific keywords.

a non-linear line

Every SeeBeNow video is part of an 8-part series of independent lessons taught by a single instructor. Each series contains videos with a mix of different Elements and Categories.

We wanted users who had completed a video to be able to very quickly and easily see what series that video came from, and how many other videos were left in that series that they hadn't watched yet.

The solution was to create a My Practice tab. This allows the home tab to show videos mixed together, and after you watch a video, that video's series can be tracked in My Practice.

VISUAL DESIGN

It was important to put the focus on the content rather than distract from it. Because the videos thumbnails are so beautiful, it made sense to make the video thumbnails the primary source of visual excitement. In order to accomplish this, I designed a very minimal and clean interface with a white background.

cyclical design

The product design process is cyclical, and since the release, we have continued conducting UX research to determine how the experience could be further improved. With rapidly growing downloads and a 13% conversion rate to paid monthly subscribers, the response has been very positive. We also discovered that many users would like a more guided experience. Because SeeBeNow offers more than 350 videos, it can be overwhelming to decide which ones to watch.

THE GAME

In response to user research and feedback post-launch, we decided for the next iteration to use gamification patterns and video game aesthetics to create a guided journey through a set of curated yoga and meditation paths. This game is named Elementa.
